Monomyth
Editor: D.J. Tyrer

38 Pierrot Steps, 71 Kursaal Way,
Southen-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 2UY

Reviewer:  Idris Caffrey

Monomyth is a well established magazine going now for over ten years. Edited by the enthusiastic D.J.Tyrer,  it comes in A4 format with a

supplement thrown in for good measure.  Book reviews, articles, a letters section, short stories, art work, poetry and news, there is certainly a lot in it. Perhaps this is one of its weaknesses, that it is too broad and although it deals with each of the above adequately there is not one section that I could say was exceptionally good.

Having said that there is no doubt that subscribers would get good value from this magazine and enjoy much of the work within. There is a well written short story by Bryn Fortey and a poem that caught my eye was Three Seconds by Joe Miller, a very moving poem this about starving children with its memorable last lines :

Whilst you have been reading this,
Count now how many have died.

The Letters To The Editor part of the magazine supplement was quite thought provoking although it did contain a number of negative letters where writers were having "a go" at one another. There is still unfortunately a lot of petty jealousy and back-stabbing in the small press world which defeats the whole idea of writing in the first place.

The best section of the magazine, for me, was the REVIEW section. Very informative this and well written too.

To sum up, Monomyth is a very well-meaning magazine that needs to review exactly where ifs going in the future and hopefully it will be here with us more focused and even better in the next ten years.
